Is Laughing Gas Safe for Kids? Pediatric Sedation FAQ

TeamUncategorized

When sedation is recommended, it is common for parents to question whether laughing gas is safe for children. The short answer? Yes. It is, after all, one of the safest and most widely used forms of pediatric dental sedation available today. And when administered by trained professionals, it offers a gentle and effective way to help kids feel calm and comfortable while undergoing dental treatment.

Because we want parents to feel confident in making decisions for their little ones, we have answered the most common questions about laughing gas below.

What is Laughing Gas?

Formally known as nitrous oxide, laughing gas is a colorless gas mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask that is placed over your child’s nose. As they breathe normally, the gas will begin to take effect within minutes. It creates a feeling of relaxation. Some even report feeling as if they are floating.

Your child will remain awake and responsive throughout the entire visit. They will be able to talk and follow directions, communicating with our team as needed. The only thing missing is the anxiety and fear that will sometimes follow them to the dentist.

Is Laughing Gas Safe for Kids?

Yes, laughing gas is considered very safe when administered by trained pediatric dental professionals. It has been used in sedation dentistry for children for decades and is carefully monitored throughout the procedure.

The levels can be adjusted to ensure that the child is comfortable at all times, starting just before the treatment begins. And once the procedure is complete, the gas will be turned off. Your child will continue to breathe in pure oxygen from the mask to flush out any remaining gas. It only takes a few minutes for the effects to wear off.

Why Would My Child Need Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas can be used for nearly any dental visit, from simple cleanings to lengthy, complex treatments. It is often recommended when a child feels anxious about dental visits or a particular procedure. It may also be used for those who find it difficult to sit still.

Pediatric dentists find that laughing gas can prove to benefit those patients who have a sensitive gag reflex. When sedated in this manner, they are able to relax, making it easier for the dentist to move forward with treatment.

Simply put, kids have a much more positive overall dental experience when they can just sit back and feel comfortable.  Laughing gas makes this possible.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Serious side effects are extremely uncommon with nitrous oxide. Most patients do not report any side effects, but feeling slightly dizzy or nauseous is possible. These sensations are temporary, often passing as soon as the gas is stopped.

We always tell our patients to inform us right away if something doesn’t feel right.
